Spectrum : Namjune Paik’s 80th exhibition

23 Jul

Spectrum is Namjune Paik’s 80th anniversary exhibition at SOMA Art Museum in Seoul. It opens during July 6th to October 16th. However, I was a little disappointed, because there is no any criterion or intention for displaying his art pieces in the museum and I also feel lack of docent’s explanations. But, Paik is amazing artist as the pioneer of video art. Among his works, there is an art piece of which entitle is ”Before the Word There was light, After the Word There will be Light. (ed.12/18, 1992)” It is a video sculpture which consists of Dumont television casting with candle. The candle is burning and if the light off, then the light can be lit through the hole. I think the title is philosophical. ‘Before the Word There was light’: Before using the word, men have used the fire, so fire is primitive and in the beginning, there was a light. ‘After the Word There will be Light’: As the light of the candle is placed in the monitor of the television, the light  represents the light of monitor, ray. At the time (1992) when this piece was made, television was very innovative amazing. In the same time, I could also find the one of the most primitive thing as light in the modern thing. As Paik installed this work, he threw the question to audiences about what is the meaning that television gives for us.

DMZ

23 Jul

We have known that the relation between South and North Korea is very nervous. Because of the history and the war, there are so many tragedies happened between South and North Korea. Though the two countries are nearby each other and also they have the same source of blood in their body, they fight to each other. Though the relation has been batter for the past few years, there are still a lot of problems between the two countries. The case of the problem between South and North Korea is similar to the relation between Taiwan and China. Many years ago, there are a lot of people from China kept coming to Taiwan for better living or for the war. Suddenly, the war between communism and capitalistic made things became complicated. When seeing the history at DMZ and the third infiltration tunnel, I have been thinking about that it’s lucky for us that the relation between Taiwan and China isn’t as serious as the relation between South and North Korea now.

At DMZ, it reminds me the art work”Blood Line” that I had saw at SeMA. It is made by Hyongnam Ahn. The art work is telling about the war between South and North. It tries to tell us that they had the same source of blood, but fight to each other. Why people have to fight even we had the same blood? It is really complicated to answer the question. And the most important thing is how to have a safe and peace relation.

Communication Research??

23 Jul

For me, the “Communication Research” is the most interesting art work made by Nam June Paik.

When there are human beings live in the society, it must bring communication. The communication between people and people is very interesting. We can share our feelings by communication and we can make up the relationship by having a good communication. Even we don’t have the same language to talk to each other, we still can have a communication by our body language.

There are so many people came in and out of our lives, every one of the passing visitors have some kinds of communication with us. For us, the communication between ourselves and others is like a question mark, which means unknown. We don’t know about each other at the beginning, but after the communication had been produced, we started to have emotions to each other. And the emotion is the heart made by the two question marks in the art work. Also the heart means the relationship from friends, family, and lover. It is really interesting to see Nam June Paik using a couple of simple question marks to show the complicated relation between human beings.

About Nam June Paik

23 Jul

Nam June Paik manipulates color and black and white televisions to express his theme. His objective through using the television is to make the TV set itself, not just by using what is shown on the screen but by using the screen as a sculpture. With the 80th anniversary, the exhibition has the opening performance by his friend to remember him. The exhibition shows his painting. He was also humor that to talk people he is a good painter. With the painting, I can see the child inside his heart. The most work I like is about (?). We usually put a symbol (?) to question which seems just born for the answer. But he change the stereotype impression, he put the (?) in the different view and become the heart. That’s really a unusual thinking. The meaning with the picture, I think it also talk about people ‘s relationship. If you look in the different view, you may find someone with extraordinary.

Korean folk village

23 Jul

With Ewha university international students from different countries and different cultures, all of us visited the place where bring the Korea dynasty’s traditional. In folk village, I can see many original complex Chinese words in some furniture, they make me feel close. The most interesting thing is that there is some antique child toy I had saw in Korea drama. For example윷놀이, the game will throw the윷놀이and work in the a square. Each time you throw will show the different윷놀이, then you should go with different appearance in a square line. It’s similar to Taiwan’s (senpei uranai)『擲筊.』In Chinese culture, we use a piece of wood carved in half-moon shaped in temple. In the process of pleading to gods above we use TWO of them and throw in the floor. If the smooth side is up and the other rough one is up, too, that means “yes” as in pic one. If two smooth sides are up, it means “no” as in pic two. If two rough sides are up, it means you should do it again until you have the comment (yes) or (no). In Taiwan, it’s a belief to people for asking, but it’s a fun game in korea. They use in the similar way, but both of them create the different culture to people. That’s funny to understand the culture which in a different way!
